THIS year's recent end of year art and design exhibition and fashion show at Pembrokeshire College certainly demonstrated the broad range of depth of artistic talent in Pembrokeshire, from traditional drawing and painting to using computer and animated design.
"We were very pleased with the students' work. It was a very strong year and yet again all those who have applied on higher education courses have been offered places," stated programme area manager Ed Tanguay.
"In fact, it's been a wonderful year for the department. We were awarded the top grade 1 for teaching and student achievement by government inspectors Estyn in January and we have been on a high every since."
Principal Glyn Jones opened the exhibition preview and encouraged everybody to view all the work on display. In particular he praised: Jessica Travers, who studied the BTEC Foundation in Art and Design and has a place at Manchester Met studying a BA in Contemporary Crafts; Ben Cawkwell, who studied the Advanced GNVQ in Art and Design and has a place at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication studying BA Hons in Interaction Design; Emily Gravett, who has a place at Brighton University studying BA Hons in Illustration and studied on the Art and Design course; Jonathan Barnes, for his innovative work on the HND Industrial Design course.
After the art exhibition preview, there were two dynamic and very professional fashion shows in the 220-seater Merlin Theatre due to demand. The fashion work, undertaken by both first and second year art and design students, was interspersed by film inserts from foundation and graphic design students, as well as additional sections from hairdressing students.
"Students demonstrated a broad range of fashion skills from production of textiles to welding. They produced fabric prints using silkscreen processes combined with embroidery, applique and batik. But most importantly of all, they took a sensitive approach to colour," commented fashion and textiles lecturer Julia Rees.
"I think it's important for students to see the garments being modelled - it brings them to life. The students are encouraged to work in innovative and avant garde ways and we were all delighted with the finished result."
