A Pembrokeshire primary school has got Christmas all wrapped up!

Youngsters at Pennar Community School have won first prize in a Christmas tree decoration competition.

The annual competition is organised by the National Botanic Garden of Wales - in conjunction with Careers Wales West - and attracts entries from across the country.

This year's theme was Wild Wales and the nine to 11-year-olds at Pennar created decorations from recyclable materials illustrating a local woodland at midnight.

"The children were ecstatic at winning," said the school's arts teacher, Claire Thomas. "They really got into the spirit of the competition and thoroughly enjoyed it."

It's not the first time Pennar School has done well in the competition - also coming top of the tree in 2006.

They prepared their decorations in advance at the school's after-school arts club run by Claire Thomas and teaching assistant, Dawn Russell.

Last Friday, they travelled to the garden to decorate their allotted tree - one of 24 put up for the occasion in the garden's Great Glasshouse.

A spokesman for the National Botanic Garden said the annual competition was extremely popular with both secondary and primary school pupils.

"As well as being fun and creative, the competition aims to demonstrate how household items can be re-used and recycled in innovating ways," he said.

"The children are always fantastically creative."

Pennar's youngsters were the winning primary school team, while Queen Elizabeth High won the secondary section.

The youngsters won a white board projector for their school.
