Members of the Armed Services, veterans and representatives of the Royal British Legion gathered outside County Hall in Haverfordwest on Monday for a special flag-raising ceremony.

The ceremony marked Armed Forces Day, which will be celebrated on Saturday, June 24.

Armed Forces Day - held for the ninth time - is an opportunity for the nation to show support for its servicemen and women - from veterans to serving soldiers and their families.

Throughout this week - and in common with other local authorities throughout the country - Pembrokeshire County Council is flying the Armed Forces Flag on one of its four flagpoles.

At Monday’s ceremony, Pembrokeshire County Council’s chairman, Clr. Paul Harries, paid tribute to the Forces and led a minute’s silence in respect of the two servicemen who lost their lives in a training accident at Castlemartin Tank Range last week.

He noted that Pembrokeshire, with its historical association with the Armed Forces has shown its wholehearted support for them in flying the flag every year since the day’s inauguration in 2009.

Rev. Geoffrey Eynon, chaplain of the Royal British Legion, led the gathering in prayer.

Those attending the ceremony included the Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, Pembrokeshire County Councillor for the Army Reserves and Cadets, Clr. John Cole and council leader, Clr. David Simpson.
