Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir sang at the Town Hall on Friday, April 1, in a concert in aid of Pembrokeshire Crossroads, Caring for Carers. It was apparent from the reaction of the capacity audience that the choir were in very fine form, under their new conductor, Mrs. Christine Lloyd, and her musical team of Jennifer Griffiths and Allyson Griffiths. It was a participating night also for the audience as they were encouraged, with the aid of a song sheet, to sing with the choir, some popular songs of their youth. Some misty eyes were in evidence on completion of the well-loved favourites. This interlude proved to be a pleasurable and popular change for the audience from the usual formality of the choir's programme, but both interludes were enjoyed in equal measure. During the concert's first period, a document was quietly circulated among the audience seeking their reaction to some artistic designs of a proposed new uniform for the choir's conductor. Mr. George Lewis (choir artistic advisor) was given responsibility for offering his ideas on the subject of the uniform design. At the interval period, conductor Mrs. Lloyd very bravely modelled the initial creation of Mr. Lewis's (dare we say it) fanciful imagination to the general amazement, hilarity and incredulity of all those present. It has to be noted that some doubts existed as to whether the uniform design would reach the final production stage and be adopted as Mrs. Lloyd's uniform of choice. To her utmost credit, Mrs. Lloyd maintained her dignity and composure during this very trying time. A stark contrast to many another model who might have been demanding meetings with lawyers!. The remote possibility of plagiarism requires heavy censorship be imposed on all specific design details. Mrs. Lloyd acquiesced reluctantly to deny the public photographs of Mr. Lewis's creation on the same basis. Mrs. Lloyd was accorded a deeply warming, sympathetic welcome on returning to conduct in her normal glamorous attire. Could this possibly have been a tongue in cheek episode? Surely not at a Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir concert! The possibility of some connection with the date was rejected out of hand. A more serious note was struck later when Mrs. Sheila Smith, chair of Caring for Carers, explained the organisation's purpose and warmly thanked the choir and audience for their generous support. The choir was originally formed in 1952 and still included in the ranks is founder member, the very well-known figure of Mr. Owen Jones. Mr. Jones and his wife recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. Frank Harries, choir chairman, presented a memento from the choir to Owen and his wife to mark the happy occasion. Mr. Owen Jones, principal bass, Mr. David Thomas, baritone, and Henry Johnson, tenor, delighted and entertained the audience further with solos in their own individual styles. The second half of the concert concluded with romantic pieces from the choir and the Welsh National Anthem. The audience had been royally entertained without any doubt.
