A stiff south-westerly, together with thickening rough, made scoring difficult, but the greens were almost back to their slick best. As in recent years, the format was the aggregate of the best two stableford scores from the teams of four players per hole.
The 2011 winners were regular supporters of the Rotary Charity Golf Day, South Haven Construction, of Pembroke Dock. Director Austin Davies was joined by his son Mike, friend and another developer Billy Harries, plus quantity surveyor Gareth Rees. They recorded an excellent total of 86 points.
Charnwait Management's team of Matt Goldwait, Dai and Andrew Cope and Steve Maytum were a very close second with 85 points, which included just three points on the 18th hole.
Lloyds TSB Bank, led by Neil Thomas, were a creditable third with 83 points. He was joined by Mike Schooling, Darren Thomas and Phil Goodridge.
Three teams shared fourth spot on 82 points i.e. Alexander Partnership (Paul Hoyland, Ian Thomas, Steve Allen and Juan Cruz), Chevron (Spencer Harries, Jeremy Morris, Dai Forrest and Terry Davies) and Hi-tech Roofing (Chris Beecher, Mervyn Tucker, Adrian Bragg and Carl Bristow).
Tenby Golf Club Captain's Quartet (John Gillespie, Huw Roberts, Gethin Evans and Tim Rowe) were the only others to top 80 points out of the 16 teams which entered.
The nearest the pins were claimed by Huw Roberts (6th), Mike Wainwright (12th) and Ian Thomas (17th); nearest the pin in two - Chris Beecher (5th), Mike Davies (9th) and Simon Rossiter (18th) plus longest drive - Ian Elias (2nd) and Lee Waters (14th).
Following the prize-giving, numerous prizes were raffled, including green fee vouchers which were kindly donated by various golf clubs in South Wales. The evening entertainment was provided by veteran but evergreen comedian Bryn Phillips, a great favourite at Tenby Golf Club.
Members of the Rotary Clubs of Tenby and Saundersfoot wish to thank all the companies and individuals who sponsored either a team or a hole. Entries were slightly down on last year, but the generosity of the sponsors is very much appreciated, especially in these tough economic times.
Once all monies have been collected, a balance sheet will be produced and the proceeds will be shared equally by both Rotary Clubs for subsequent distribution to international, national and local charities.
