Last Friday evening, over 50 Soroptimists, friends and relations gathered at the Giltar Hotel for a culinary feast of puddings, all in aid of local charities.
SI president Dr. Anne Kelly was delighted to welcome Captain David Morgans, Commanding Officer of the Tenby Salvation Army, and his wife, Captain Judith Morgans, as the club's guests at the event.
Talented chef Philip and his team yet again excelled themselves, producing a sumptuous selection of sweet and savoury creations, which included mini toad-in-the-holes, chicken and mushroom vol-au-vents, Welsh cheese tartlets, succulent sorbets and creamy tiramisu. All agreed that it was a banquet fit for royalty.
On a more serious note, President Anne then gave a brief overview of the SI Tenby's seven year programme to combat modern day slavery and trafficking. The club's activities have involved organising exhibitions with local schools, setting up forums, lobbying MPs in Westminster and working collaboratively with Dyfed Powys police and Barnardo's Cymru to research the extensiveness of problems related to trafficking and slavery. Anne also paid tribute to Secretary Wendy Bell for spear-heading the club's 12 year battle to raise awareness of FGM, culminating in the presentation by MP Simon Hart of a 2,000 strong petition to David Cameron last month.
The evening concluded with a presentation to Captain Morgans of the money raised from the club's sponsored walk through the town last August to help raise awareness of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. This amounted to more than £700 to help the Salvation Army provide support to individuals being rescued from trafficking through their on-going campaign 'Cry Freedom'.
SI Tenby would like to Pam Maggs and her fellow helpers for all their hard work in organising this fabulous Festival of Puddings which raised a considerable amount for local charities. It also created the opportunity to present the sponsorship money to the Salvation Army. Thanks, as always, are also extended to Patrick, Malcolm and their staff for helping to make the evening such a resounding success.
The club's next event is an afternoon of fashion and Victorian tea, sponsored by T. P. Hughes and Son, at The Giltar Hotel, at 2.30 pm, on Sunday, October 26, again in aid of local charities. Tickets are £10, available from SI Tenby members.
