With the Divots v Rabbits match out of the way, it's back to normality as the Divots carry on with their winter league programme. They only have eight weekends remaining before they vanish on their annual end of winter trip.
More about the trip later, but for now the situation becomes interesting. As the league title will be awarded to the player who has accumulated the best six stableford scores through the winter, each week you have to keep improving on your worst score. The higher up the table you are, the harder this task becomes.
With 10 players in the hat for this week's draw, Nigel decided that a two-ball should start the proceedings, with two four-balls following. Further, the captain's challenge to bogey or better the par four eighth was no mean task.
The first two out were The Walrus and Bill. The Walrus was all smiles in the clubhouse as Bill, over the last few weeks, has been playing very well and he was really looking forward to improving his league position. Sadly, The Walrus was in for a shock. Bill couldn't hit a barn door from three feet (about 900mm for you metric buffs), which continued until Bill eventually contributed to the proceedings on the eighth with two points. By this time the Walrus had accumulated 12 points, mainly due to his own efforts. A total of 24 points on the back nine gave the pair a total of 36 points, and left the Walrus wondering what could have been if he had drawn a better partner.
The first four-ball consisted of the pairing of Loz and Roger playing alongside the pairing of captain Nigel and Jim. Well Loz and Roger played steady golf, with 17 points on the front nine and 18 on the back, thus returning a score of 35 points.
Nigel, however, hadn't played against the Rabbits last week and was keen to get his competitive juices flowing again. This he did as he and Jim came in with what would surely be the winning score.
However, the 40 points they accumulated was not enough, as the final four-ball pairing of John Stevenson and Jampot had other ideas.
In this final four-ball, it may have seemed that the other pairing of Richard Chapman and Gareth Phillips were there to make up the numbers... well perhaps not quite. Richard and Gareth totalled 30 points, with a front nine of 16 and a back nine of 14. This, however, was not the worst score this season, eh Gav'.
Meanwhile, John and Jampot were doing their thing and pipped Nigel and Jim by a single point to the prize money, with a final score of 41 points. The win puts Jampot in the number one slot and lifts John into seventh. Well done guys.
As far as the challenge was concerned, Bill, Roger, Jim, Richard and John all passed with flying colours. On the other hand, The Walrus, Loz, Nigel, Gareth and Jampot increased the fines kitty to the tune of £5.
As mentioned earlier, the Divots' end of winter tour will take place from Friday to Sunday, March 20-22. They will be staying at the Dragon Hotel in Swansea (see their website at http://www.dragon-hotel.co.uk">http://www.dragon-hotel.co.uk), and will be playing on two of West Wales' premier golf courses at Clyne and Fairwood Park Golf Clubs.
