Calls are being made for urgent action to be taken to combat mal-odour emissions from the waste water treatment works at Narberth Bridge.

Local resident, Mr. John Clark, of 3 Bridge Villas, is up in arms over the disgusting and noxious smells which are polluting the atmosphere in the area surrounding the site.

"I have written letters and complained to Welsh Water many many times, yet the smells persist," explained Mr. Clark, who moved to the area in July 1999.

"Everyone is very polite and apologetic, yet the smells continue," he told the Observer.

"My refusal to pay water bills until the problem is rectified has met with contempt and threats of bailiffs from Hyder," he pointed out.

"The smells extend from September 1999 to the present day. How long do I and other residents nearby have to endure this environmental pollution.

"Everyone is agreed, particularly us newcomers, that Pembrokeshire is an outstandingly beautiful county, yet Hyder appear free to pollute it at will," he stressed.

"In addition, I have spoken to the local MP's secretary, as well as Mr. Griffiths, the Plaid Cymru candidate, in an attempt to draw attention to our plight here."

When contacted by the Observer this week, a spokesman for Hyder Operations, who operate and maintain the site, explained that the company were carrying out improvements to the odour control system currently on site.

"The improvements will cost in excess of £40,000 and that money has been applied for," commented Stewart Treharne, of Hyder Operations.

"The investment is imminent; I have spoken to Mr. Clark about the matter and have told him that we will keep him informed about the progress.

"As far as the company is concerned we certainly don't want to be causing a nuisance or inconvenience to any customer," he added.
