Manorbier and District Community Association hosted a very enjoyable day on the beach last Saturday. The village was treated to three fun events during the course of the afternoon; the first saw a procession of hedgehogs, large and small, weird and wonderful, making their way from the cricket field to the beach to the accompaniment of Manorbier's very own Samba Band. This was all due to the hard work and enjoyment of children who had been doing workshops during the week with MADCAP (Manorbier and District Community Arts Programme). The traffic literally did stop and the villagers came out to cheer on the intrepid artists of the future! Once on the beach, a hedgehog procession/race ensued to the amazement and delight of many bemused tourists. The WI ladies turned out in force, providing refreshments and the delicious cakes for which they are renowned. Never have so many fairy cakes been eaten by so many hedgehogs in one afternoon! As if that wasn't enough for the bemused beach- goers, the Community Association then stepped in and began a series of duck races in the stream that flows down the beach. Jameston's very own crier, Des Brown, began proceedings and children of all sizes and ages helped to coerce reluctant ducks on their race to the finish line. The stream saw much yelling for favourites, cheering and splashing that afternoon. The fun didn't stop there, however. At 4 pm, Manorbier's community councillor, Peter Kidney, stepped into the waves and began his charity swim to Lydstep. Rob Hall provided support from a rescue boat, which wasn't needed thankfully, and just under an hour later he rose from the waves at Lydstep, a tired but triumphant James Bond's Halle Berry. While Peter was braving the waves, literally, the football team and supporters ran the coast path from Manorbier to Lydstep, but that not being much of a challenge for them, they did it twice. Perhaps more sensibly, some ladies opted to walk it just the once not to be outdone or left behind. The reason for all this frivolity was to raise money for the Community and Association Sports Pavilion and Football Club. Needless to say, a lot of money was raised, community spirit enhanced and a huge amount of fun was had by all.
