An ambitious development proposed for one of South Pembrokeshire's best-known beach cafes is likely to get the go-ahead today (Friday). Members of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park's development management committee are being recommended to approve an application to convert the former Fountains Cafe, South Beach, Tenby, into 19 holiday apartments, associated car parking spaces, beach related retail and cafe facilities. The proposal is for two separate buildings, each of three storeys, with one block providing cafe/ restaurant and retail uses on the ground floor and nine holiday letting units on the upper floors and a surfer viewing platform, and the second block providing car parking at ground floor level and 10 holiday letting units on the upper floors. "This proposal offers an exciting opportunity to redevelop this site which is currently a considerable eysore and severely detracts from the Conservation Area and the beach," says the officer's appraisal which will be considered at the meeting. "The proposal will provide retail and cafe uses that will provide a needed facility to the beach as well as providing a contribution to the tourist economy through the provision of holiday letting units. The buildings, whilst large, are contemporary and sit well within their landscape context and will enhance the character of the Conservation Area and overall area." At the meeting, the committee will also consider two other applications submitted relating to the proposal. The first seeks conservation area consent for the demolition of the existing building which members are being recommended to grant subject to appropriate conditions, while the other seeks listed building consent for the relocation of the Festival of Britain memorial to within the new piazza/terrace area of the proposed development. Subject to the main application being approved, members are likely to advise Cadw that there is no objection to the plan.
