An ambitious plan is in the pipeline for a major redevelopment of the area around Tenby's multi-storey car park. The project for a four-storey residential development with new public toilets, new tourist information centre and retail outlets on the ground floor is being planned by Pembrokeshire County Council. Plans for the Upper Park Road revamp have been submitted to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and will be considered at the February meeting of the authority's development management committee. The site is currently occupied by a mix of use, including an area of open space, a multi-storey car park and supermarket. The county council application seeks outline approval for the redevelopment of the front portion of the site which currently has open space, access roads to the multi-storey and the toilet block located within it. The reserved matters for the siting of the proposed building (which is intended would screen the existing multi-storey car park from the road) is also sought. If approved, the proposal would provide a scheme which involves a tourist information centre, public conveniences, 220-square metres of retail floorspace and 480-square metres of residential accommodation on the first, second, third and fourth floors. When contacted by the Observer, a spokesman for the National Park Authority confirmed that an application had been received from agents acting on behalf of the county council. "There are a range of issues to consider and a number of parties to consult, so although the application will be included on the planning committee schedule for the next meeting on February 16, it is unlikely to be determined," said the spokesman. "One of the concerns of officers is that the application is in outline only, testing the principle of development, and there are no details of massing, design etc., which are considered necessary for the proper consideration of this type of application in the National Park," the spokesman added. The plan has been welcomed by Clr. Mike Evans, one of the town's county council representatives "I very much support the proposed refurbishment of the multi-storey car park in Tenby, as it will improve car-parking facilities for local people and for those working in the town," he said. "The car park is for many visitors their gateway into the town and the present building leaves a lot to be desired," he continued. . "For a resort like Tenby, which depends so much on the holiday trade, first impressions count. We need to make sure that this gateway does not mar our wonderful beaches and the picturesque charm of the rest of the resort," he added. Tenby Town Council are also being consulted on the proposal and will consider the application at their meeting on Tuesday.
