Narberth Under 12s rugby team travelled to Whitland for a cup game on a bright sunny Sunday, which was very welcome after all the weather disruption this season.
It was always going to be a very tough game between two very evenly matched teams. Whitland has a very strong pack who work hard, so it was never going to be easy.
Playing such a keenly fought tussle on the Whitland First XV pitch, in bright weather, brought out a large number of supporters who, as usual, were very vocal!
After a hectic first half, Whitland led 5-0.
After a team talk from Gareth, Jon and Nats, the Narberth team were ready for the second half.
Whitland took the initiative and scored soon after the break, with the pack working well for a pick and drive try, which was converted - Whitland 12 Narberth 0.
A determined run by Narberth fullback Harry Jones from inside his own half looked as if it would end with him touching down himself, but after being tackled inches from the line, powerful number eight Joe Twose was in support to open their scoring. The conversion from a wide angle fell short.
With 10 minutes remaining, the Narberth boys were in determined mood and some good back play saw fly-half William Ratcliffe break through and show his speed for a try under the posts, which was converted, to bring the teams level.
Under cup rules, if the score had stayed that way, Narberth would have been the winners, as the away team goes through.
Whitland weren't going to give up, though, and came back strongly, with a lot of forward pressure resulting in Narberth conceding a penalty which, with minutes to go, Whitland opted to convert.
With supporters checking their watches, the last few moments were very tense. Whitland were given a penalty as 'last play'. As they headed for the touchline, Narberth tackled well and turned it over, and some quick hands from the backs saw centre Benedikt Weber break through and show his incredible speed, beating several defenders to score a try in the corner.
It had been a breathless game, with two very good sides competing well, the final score being Whitland 15 Narberth 17.
