Local AM Simon Thomas has given his support to Tenby’s Avenue Centre which is being threatened with closure.

“I am supporting the carers, family members and service users of The Avenue Social Activity Centre in Tenby who are facing the closure of this vital facility,” said the Plaid Cymru Assembly Member.

“At very little notice to the stakeholders of the centre, its future was brought into question by Pembrokeshire Council. I am very concerned that little detailed work has been done by the local authority to assess the needs of those who use the centre.

“I was pleased to be able to visit the centre before Christmas and meet campaigners, who told me the centre is a lifeline for the 38 people who attend and of the distress caused by the threat of closure.

“The purpose of the centre is to provide daily social interactions and provide varying levels of care. Some of the service users travel from up to 17 miles to reach the Tenby centre, and to close it would bring in to doubt what provision would be provided in its place as there seems to be no clear alternative provision.

“Plaid Cymru calls on the Welsh Government to protect rural councils such as Pembrokeshire when the local government budget is set, but if cuts are made it is vital the most vulnerable people are protected.

“A decision will be taken after a public consultation, which ends next month. I urge people to make their views known,” added Mr. Thomas.
