Sir,
Many regard the sluice in Tenby harbour as an unsightly, muddy, useless, eyesore. They argue that it should be filled in for car or boat parking, covered over, or that the wall be removed to create 30 odd new moorings. Unfortunately, I doubt any of these solutions would pass tests imposed by either CADW or the National Park.
There is an alternative enhancement I should like to propose, though I'm probably not the first to have thought it. When next the pier head is excavated of sand blocking the harbour mouth, could not that sand be removed into the sluice? If already cleaned up and levelled, the excess sand could be filled up along half the sluice's length, just above high water mark at the 'arch' end, and making a slope into a large sandy pool at the 'stores' end. Access would be the existing boat slope.
Surely a new, safe, sandy beach designed for young families would be a great asset to our resort. A bit of imagination, perhaps some kindly donated rubber rings and other beach playthings, and the sluice could sell itself to everyone's benefit.
Will Rossiter,
Tenby.
