A new tennis league has been set up in Pembrokeshire.

Representatives of tennis clubs throughout the county met last week with officers from Sport Pembrokeshire to set up the new county-wide league.

The league will be made up of new clubs at Fishguard, Milford and Tenby - which have recently been launched by Sport Pembrokeshire (Pembrokeshire County Council's sports development service) - along with existing Haverfordwest and South Pembs clubs.

The league has been registered with Tennis Wales and will take part in inter-club team competitions at mini tennis (U11s), junior (U16s) and senior levels.

Texaco has agreed to sponsor the new league, which will be called the Texaco Pembrokeshire Tennis League.

Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for sport, leisure and tourism, said the new league had been made possible by the hard work of Sport Pembrokeshire officers and the authority's investment in upgrading tennis courts and facilities around the county.

"In particular, new school-based courts at Tenby, Milford and Fishguard have provided the new clubs with courts that conform to LTA standard requirements," he said.

John Deason, Sport Pembrokeshire manager, said tennis was an extremely popular sport that needed to shed its exclusive image.

"Clubs in Pembrokeshire are open to all and the growth of new junior sections on school sites is particularly encouraging," he said.

"We are grateful to Texaco for once again stepping in at the beginning of a new initiative and I am confident that their support will be reflected in the growth of new clubs and the expansion of existing ones."

Phil Thompson, public affairs for Chevron Texaco, said the refinery had a long association with Sport Pembrokeshire and was delighted to support the new tennis initiative.
