It's all change at the top of education in Pembrokeshire. Four of the county's longstanding secondary school head teachers are retiring this year and four new heads will take the helm. Dr. George Davies, of Sir Thomas Picton School, leaves this summer after 18 years in charge of the Haverfordwest school. He will be replaced by the school's deputy head Joan Bessant. His Haverfordwest colleague Chris Jones, headteacher at Tasker Milward is also leaving this summer after 15 years in charge. The new head will be Maggie Haynes, presently deputy head at Cantonian High School in Cardiff. Pamela Munday, headteacher at Milford Haven School, will leave in December. She will be replaced by Islwyn Morgan, currently head teacher at Kenfig Hill in Bridgend. Walter Dash, former head teacher at Ysgol Dewi Sant, retired at Easter. His deputy Ray Bevan is currently acting head. Clr. Islwyn Howells, cabinet member for children and young people, praised the departing heads and said they had given outstanding service to their pupils and communities. "To impart knowledge and inspire young minds is one of the noblest callings there is and I salute all four heads who have given outstanding service over the years," he said. Joan Bessant, who takes over at Sir Thomas Picton in September said she was looking forward to her new role. "Teachers face a number of increasing problems as society changes and becomes more complex while young people are under increasing pressure," she said. "But I'm looking forward to the challenge." Maggie Haynes, who moves to Pembrokeshire to take over at Tasker Milward in September, said she had always wanted to work in a truly comprehensive school. "Unlike many other areas in Wales there is no selection by post code. So we can work together to make sure all our children succeed," she said. "It's also a wonderful area in which to bring up my own children."
