Two athletes from West Wales are on their way to the Indian city of Pune, to compete in the Commonwealth Youth Games - and their hopes are high.

Danielle Jones from Carmarthen and Daniel Court from Pembroke Dock are representing Wales in shooting.

They join the 37-strong team of young Welsh athletes travelling to India for the games.

In total, 71 countries will be competing at the games which will see many of the athletes of the future taking part.

Daniel said: "I'm really pleased to have been selected for the Wales Commonwealth Youth Games team and to be given the opportunity to represent my country. I have been working hard in preparation for the games and I'm really looking forward to the experience."

Danielle added; "The success of the athletes from Wales at the Beijing Olympics has been a real boost to me and I can't wait to get to Pune to compete."

Zack Davies from Carmarthen will also represent Wales in boxing at the Youth Commonwealth Games.

Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Council for Wales director, said: "The Youth Commonwealth Games are very important for young athletes as it gives them invaluable experience of competing on an international stage".

"Many of the athletes taking part in the Youth Games will be strong candidates for Delhi 2010 and beyond for London in 2012."

The Youth Games will take place in Pune between October 13 and 19.
