Last Saturday, Tenby Golf Club hosted a charity open golf event which was in aid of the Welsh Guards who have served out in the Afghanistan conflict.

Many of the regiment's combatants have been killed or severely wounded in this arena and the charities aim is to raise over a £1m to support them and their families after the severely wounded leave the hospital in Birmingham.

The members and visitors did Tenby Golf Club proud when a sum of over £1,200 was raised on the day.

This was a combination of entry fees, donations and a collection made by Chris Beynon, the secretary of the appeal fund. To date, this is the highest sum raised by a golf club in Wales and those who took part or/and donated are to be congratulated on their magnificent achievement.

It was intended to run an auction in the evening with some valuable prizes, including a round of golf for four and Machynys Golf Club and many other prizes. Due to the clash with the Man Utd v Barcelona football match, it was decided to hold this over to Open Week. The date at this time of writing is not known.

So to the event itself. It was the first Single Mixed Stableford event to be held at the club run on the mixed CONGU rules. It was also an Open Event and the total number taking part in the competition, including visitors, was 87, which considering the inclement weather in the morning was excellent.

Thirteen ladies played in the competition and Ros Jenkins came close to finishing in the prize money in scoring 39 points CONGU adjusted from 38 points to finish one point off the winner.

Four players finished on 40 points. The winner of the event was Philip Booth winning £50. Second was John Stenson winning £40 and third was Phil Goodridge winning £30. The top four were separated by back nine countback.

For nearest the pin, Roger Scholfield who was 4' 6" from the sixth pin won 24 cans of Brains Bitter. On the 17th, Neil Thomas managed to eclipse that on the 17th by almost holing in one, finishing just over 9" from the pin to earn himself a bottle of Glenmorangie whisky.

To boost the event, being as the large chunk had been donated to the charity, Chris Beynon brought several prizes down. A big vote of thanks must go to our club professional, Rhys Harry, who personally donated a cash sum towards the event prize fund. There were 11 twos scored all earning £7.50 each. A big thanks go to the club itself for donating the green fees paid by visitors participating in the competition.

As a result of the club's efforts, on behalf of the regiment, Chris Beynon presented the captain of Tenby GC, John Gillespie with an 'Arm and Leg' badge to be worn by the captains of Tenby GC. Plus he presented the club with a framed document, recording the occasion. It is hoped we can raise another £223 in the auction which will earn the club a silver medal and a framed document for such a sum raised.
