TWO local aviation enthusiasts are trying to raise funds to see a historic spitfire brought to Haverfordwest airfield. Fundraiser Peter Kraus and Ray Burgess, of Pembrokeshire Aviation Foundation, are putting on various events to try and raise funds to purchase the spitfire which they hope to restore and keep at Withybush Aerodrome. Last Saturday a 'Vertigo' challenge was staged at Oakwood Theme Park, with proceeds going towards an airfield museum which is hoped to be opened within the next few years. A variety show is also being lined up for Tenby's De Valence on November 16, with a Christmas charity ball also in the pipeline. There are only 200 of the spitfires estimated in existence and both Peter and Ray fear that if enough funds aren't raised, it could be bought by another enthusiast abroad. "We as a team are giving this project everything we have and hopefully one way or another we will have this remarkable aeroplane on our doorstep for everyone to see, admire and learn from, including all the history that has happened to it during its life," explained Peter. "We hope there are people out there who have been involved with aviation during the Second World War and after who will appreciate what we are trying to do. "If we manage to get the spitfire, it will be a very big tourist attraction and a very good means of education for schools and other parties," he added.
