On the seventh Sunday in the season of the Trinity, a special service of remembrance took place at St. Mary's Church. Guests and dignitaries at the event included the Lord Lieutenant of Pembrokeshire, the Honourable Robin Lewis, the Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, town clerk, Andrew Davies and Commanding Officers and members of the Tenby branches of Sea Cadets, Air Training Corps and the British Legion. Our Rector, Rev. Canon Andrew Davies, welcomed all present to this memorable and poignant act of remembrance on the eve of the centenary anniversary of the outbreak of World War One. In his address, Rector Andrew expressed his thoughts concerning the three special symbols of remembrance; the poppy, silence and the reading of the names of the victims of war. During the singing of the hymn, 'O God, our Help in Ages Past,' the newly-restored roll of honour was placed at the altar in preparation for its re-dedication. Following the act of remembrance and re-dedication, the names of almost 140 fallen, former Tenby residents, were read aloud by verger, John Morgan. The congregation then took part in the commitment to peace. With the wonderful display of the St. Mary's banners and the artistic and creative floral displays, particularly the scattered poppies tumbling down the altar steps, the church decorations certainly reflected the reverence and emotion of the occasion. Before the recessional hymn, Rector Andrew explained that this would be the last benefice service for our curate, Rev. Alex Grace, before her licensing as vicar of St. Florence and Manorbier, which will be held on September 6. We will miss her inspirational guidance and ministry amongst us, but know that she will continue to play a very particular role in the life of the benefice, not least as the Rector's wife!
