Sir,

I was appalled when I heard the news that the De Valence was to close. I think it's an absolute travesty that an old, very well-established, much-used venue like the De Valence can be closed at the drop of a hat.

I have been going to a variety of events at the De Valence for 47 years.

No town, especially a town that survives on tourism, should be without a venue for shows, drama, concerts etc. It will be a huge loss to locals and visitors alike. If we were to lose our cinema as well, it would be a devastating blow to the town as a whole. Where would people go other than a pub for their entertainment?

The town council should be doing everything in its power to see that these essential facilities are restored and maintained at all costs, and, dare I say developed to incorporate a wider variety of facilities for the benefit of all.

I have read that offers have been put forward. There are ideas out there, but instead of embracing these ideas, the town council have seen fit to reject them.

I live in hope of a positive response.

Jane Flavin,
