Folly Farm are delighted to announce the name of their rhino calf - introducing…Glyndwr - the first Welsh rhino!

The grand name reveal came on BBC’s The One Show on Thursday night.

After a 15-month pregnancy, first-time mum Dakima gave birth to a healthy male calf last month – one of only an estimated 40 eastern black rhinos to be born in the UK in the past 20 years.

The name was suggested by followers of Folly Farm on social media in recognition of founding director Glyndwr Williams.

Glyn’s lightbulb moment whilst walking his cows across the Tenby road to his milking parlour on the other side saw the farm diversify into a tourist attraction in 1988.

“There was never any doubt that the first rhino to be born in Wales would have a Welsh name,” said zoo curator at Folly Farm Tim Morphew.

“He’s an ambassador for his species and wherever he ends up, either furthering the breeding programme in other European zoos or being returned to Africa, he’ll always fly the flag for Wales.

“No-one was more passionate about bringing rhinos to Wales than Glyn, so we’re thrilled our calf bears his full name Glyndwr, a strong, Welsh name steeped in history.

“It was an obvious choice with Glyn the driving force behind us joining the Eastern black rhino captive reintroduction breeding programme in 2015.”

BBC’s The One Show kindly helped Folly Farm reveal the baby rhino’s name on air, with Alex Jones, a proud Welsh girl herself declaring it a strong Welsh name!

She also told viewers that she’d been going to Folly Farm for years!

As well as meeting the baby black rhino, The One Show’s resident wildlife presenter, Mike Dilger, also enjoyed a tour of the zoo.

“From our humble beginnings as a dairy farm to the birth of a critically endangered species that may one day possibly return to the wild, we've come a long way,” said a Folly Farm spokesperson.

“Thank you for all your wonderful suggestions, we're truly touched by the way you've welcomed Glyndwr into your hearts. We promise to keep sharing updates on his progress until you can see him for yourselves.
