First official duty for Pembroke Dock's new Mayor, Clr. Jane Phillips, was to open the special Battle of the Atlantic Exhibition at the Pater Hall on Friday.

The Mayor, who had only taken office the previous evening, also attended the Coastal Command and Maritime Air Association's reunion dinner on Saturday when other guests included Deputy Mayor, Clr. Pam George.

Hundreds of local people and visitors attended the two-day exhibition which included displays by several of Pembrokeshire's heritage and history groups, whose support is gratefully acknowledged by the Sunderland Trust. A large array of models was admired on the Penfro Model Club's stand.

The exhibition and other events were able to be staged thanks to the generous backing of PLANED, the Pembrokeshire rural initiative.

Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust also acknowledges the help of Pembroke Dock WI, which provided excellent refreshments at the exhibition, and the Pater Hall Trust team in preparing the hall.

There was excellent public participation in the four guided walks over the weekend, led by historians Ted Goddard, Brian Pratt, David James and the Sunderland Trust's John Evans, who also gave a talk at the Pater Hall entitled 'PD and the Battle of the Atlantic' which was well attended.

Both of the Sunderland Trust's visitor attractions - the well established Flying Boat Centre Workshop and the new Fleets to Flying Boats Centre in the Royal Dockyard - were very popular destinations attracting large numbers of visitors. And the Trust's Glass House Coffee Shop was also well patronised.

Backing up all the events and activities were many members of the Sunderland Trust's Volunteer Team, without whose dedication and commitment the weekend would not have been able to be staged. Their tremendous contributions are especially acknowledged by the Sunderland Trust's staff team which co-ordinated the weekend of events.

Excellent support of the Sunderland Trust was also given by both the Carew Cheriton Control Tower group and the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society. Carew's uniquely designed wartime Control Tower and the WWMHS Yard and Workshop at Front Street, Pembroke Dock, were open especially on both the Friday and Saturday, adding to the aviation and maritime appeal for visitors to the area.
