Pembroke Regeneration and Enhancement Committee was established in the autumn of 2012.
In September 2012, Dr. Heather Skinner, lecturer and marketing expert at Swansea University, was invited by Pembroke Town Council to advise on improving the town's appeal to residents and tourists alike. Building on suggestions from Dr. Skinnner, Pembroke's regeneration committee was formed.
Pembroke Regeneration and Enhancement Committee members have since been well-supported by Pembrokeshire County Council's regeneration department and the cabinet member for regeneration, Clr. David Pugh.
The town and county council, together, will now be able to make great strides for the town. Huge improvements are already visible. Having said that, a foundation to improve the town's appearance, environment and its unique interesting corners was well underway in the hands of volunteers from the Town Heritage and Environment Group and The Mill Ponds Action Group.
The Regeneration and Enhancement Committee meet monthly. There are over 20 local people from all walks of life, some photographed here who attend. The title explains our role. Nevertheless, goals can only be achieved by working together. We, particularly, want more local groups and individuals of all ages to join us, enabling us and them to realise our ambitions for Pembroke.
The Regeneration and Enhancement Committee work with Pembroke 21C and its associated volunteer groups, namely The Town Heritage and Environment Group and The Mill Ponds Action Group. We also work with Pembroke and Monkton Historical Society, Pembroke Town Walls Trust, The Civic Trust, Pembroke Museum and the local creators of the Pembroke Story. The Pembroke Story exhibition can be seen on display in the Tabernacle Chapel, Main Street. Many of our members belong to all of these groups which is a huge advantage.
A regular press report was the idea of Mr. Bernie Scourfield, Pembroke Rotary Club, who joined the committee at last week's meeting. Mr. Scourfield, so interested in our discussions and aspirations, suggested that our wishes for the further enhancement of Pembroke should be shared with you. Therefore, our news will now appear in local papers after each meeting.
Projects discussed at the October meeting were the possibility of enhancing water-based leisure facilities in the Castle Pond surrounding Pembroke Castle, Pembroke in Bloom, that is, expanding on the town's floral decoration, painting and refurbishing street furniture, signposting (already well underway) empty shop occupation, artwork and historic tableaux in shops that remain unoccupied and the re-opening of the Pembroke Museum in the Town Hall in November. The date to be announced here soon.
A display on our journey can be viewed in the coming months in the main hall of Pembroke Town Hall. To become involved, please contact chair of the committee, Clr. Dennis Evans by ringing the town clerk, Mrs. Karen Didcote on 01646 683092 or call at the Town Hall between 9 am to 1 pm, from Monday to Friday.
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, November 4, at 10 am, in Pembroke Town Hall.
