Local band My Significant Other hosted a hugely successful gig at the De Valence in Tenby last Saturday. Worries about whether regular gig goers would approve of the change of venue were soon dispelled when people began turning up in large numbers very early on to ensure entry into the event. First group up were local band New Model Me, a post hardcore band, who played a mixture of covers and their own material. Their version of Alexisonfire's 'This Could be Anywhere in the World' went down really well with an unusually large crowd for an opening band, proving New Model Me, despite only having been formed over the last couple of months, already have a good local following. Next up were Swansea based Go - X, a four-piece alternative/experimental/rock band fronted by the very charismatic Josh Lindner. Full of youthful energy, they rocked the crowd from the beginning to the end of their lively set and the band's liveliness was a great backdrop for Josh's excellent vocals. Anyone who had seen 'The New Black' a few years ago would have been forgiven for thinking that they'd reformed when Narberth band Ascari started playing. Despite a few technical problems, they played a well rehearsed set, most notably 'Not a Care in the World' and 'Get a Real Job'. After an enthusiastic introduction by the gorgeous Matt Jones, My Significant Other took the stage and the crowd by storm. From their opening number, the brand new 'Devil in an Angel' to crowd favourite 'Ashes to Ashes', the boys proved that their fan base has gone from strength to strength. 'Freak', with Steve Rowe on backing vocals, swung beautifully from the haunting melodic verses to the raw powerful chorus, proving the versatility of the band's songwriting. Signed Belfast band Steer Clear were on next and despite having had a nightmare journey on the ferry, proved to be cheery and more than happy to be in Wales. From the melodic keyboard opening of 'Comebacks Aren't Your Thing' to the energy of 'Distractions', they got the crowd well and truly fuelled for their UK and Irish tour partners, The Story So Far. No strangers to Pembrokeshire, The Story So Far played Tenby Rugby Club with MSO just over a month ago, and were thrilled to be back. The Cardiff based five-piece acoustic/powerpop/ pop punk band really knew how to work the crowd, most memorably on their rocked up version of the 'Hokey Cokey', which was hilarious to watch from the back of the hall! Their number 'Friends Like These' finished off a very memorable evening full of talent, energy and entertainment. The next planned event is May 3, with the venue yet to be confirmed. All announcements will be made via the band's MySpace site on http://www.myspace.com/">www.myspace.com/ mysigother. The band will also be recording an acoustic session on Radio Pembrokeshire which can be heard on April 13.
