As I write the traditional New Year message, I am all too aware of the huge economic challenge that is still casting a shadow over Pembrokeshire.

The difficulties facing this country are having an impact everywhere - including our own small corner of west Wales.

Unfortunately, our county is not immune from the cuts and, along with other local authorities, we will have to make further considerable savings in our budget.

We have been dealing with these economic trials all year and will no doubt have to face up to more in the year to come.

In addition, we also face the challenge of reshaping local authority boundaries.

Faced with such challenges, I believe that we as County Councillors should all work together to ensure that front-line services and the vulnerable among us are protected as much as possible

Although we are living through difficult times, it is worth remembering that people are working hard both locally, county-wide and nationally to improve conditions.

There has also been much to celebrate as I look over the last year.

In 2014, for instance, we saw not one, but three royal visits to Pembrokeshire reminding us of much that is good and positive in our county.

In June, the Prince of Wales visited a traditional woollen mill at Tregwynt near Fishguard, while in November, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge helped celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Valero oil refinery at Pembroke Dock.

In April, while I was vice-chairman, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh spent the day in Pembrokeshire including lunch at Picton Castle.

September saw Ironman Wales once again come to Pembrokeshire and Tenby reminding us - and the thousands watching on TV screens across the world - how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful part of the world.

During my year in office, ceremonial duties involve me meeting people from all walks of life - young and old alike - and they never fail to inspire me with their stories. Just listening to them fills me with hope for the future.

And on that note of good cheer, may I wish you all a Healthy and Peaceful New Year.
