Pupils of Saundersfoot CP School had a 'golden' time in Bangor last weekend whilst competing in the Urdd National Swimming Gala, before returning home proudly as Welsh champions.
Having been victorious in the Pembrokeshire gala, the Year 4 boys medley relay team, including Samu Jaakola, Jake Jenkins, Callum Greer and Jacob Griffiths, made the arduous journey up to North Wales to represent both their school and county in the finals.
They swam exceptionally well in their heat, finishing almost a length ahead of the other teams, before facing a real battle in the final against a school from Colwyn Bay. The boys were pushed to the limit, being forced to swim the length of their lives to ensure they came home with gold medals, and this is exactly what they did! It was a fantastic team effort and an incredibly proud moment for the boys themselves, their parents and the members of staff of the school who made the long journey up.
However, the gold medals didn't stop there... with the fantastic Samu Jaakola also winning gold in the individual breaststroke final, swimming a personal best time, before securing an equally impressive silver medal in the individual backstroke final, again swimming a personal best time!
The final golden performance of the day came from Patrick Elliot in Year 6, who swam in the individual backstroke heat. Despite not securing a medal, Patrick showed what could be achieved through practice and determination, by swimming a personal best time and finishing fourth, leaving staff and parents alike equally as proud of his performance, as they were of the outstanding achievements of the Year 4 boys.
The staff of Saundersfoot CP would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents involved for their wonderful support, and also for making the weekend the successful and memorable weekend that it was!
