AUTHOR Alan Gibbons will be helping Pembrokeshire youngsters celebrate reading and books next month.

The award winning writer is one of several authors attending a special Children's Book Fiesta at Haverfordwest Library on October 11.

The author, who specialises in writing for teenagers, will be reading excerpts from his books including Shadow of the Minotaur, Scared to Death and the Demon Assassin.

Organised by Pembrokeshire County Council, the Book Fiesta aims to celebrate the National Year of Reading (2008). It is also part of National Children's Book Week (October 4 to 11) and the Welsh Libraries' Happy Days campaign -'Take a fresh look at your library.'

Youngsters will be able to listen to a wide range of authors, as well as take part in workshops and competitions.

Other writers include Pembrokeshire-based Atinuke, who will be launching her new book Hooray for Anna Hibiscus; Anwen Francis, who writes for young Welsh readers and who will bring along Siani the Shetland pony; and Patricia Moffett, who will demonstrate her work as a book illustrator.

Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for cultural services, said: "The simple pleasure of reading a book was often overlooked at a time of computer games and TV.

"A good book can take you on an imaginative journey every bit as exciting as a film or computer game and is still the major gateway into knowledge and education," he said.

The Children's Book Fiesta is open to youngsters of all ages, although under eights must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Booking is not necessary. Registration starts at 10 am and the day ends at 4 pm. Lunch is provided.
