Bridgend 40 pts. Whitland 10

Whitland were dumped out of the Swalec Welsh Cup by a very good Bridgend side who were just too sharp in everything they did and punished any small mistake with some great running rugby.

Having said that, Whitland made several changes at half-time and to be fair did compete a lot better in the second half.

Bridgend opened the scoring as early as the third minute when winger Chris Owens was put away for the first of his four tries of the afternoon, which outside-half Daniel Griffiths converted.

Griffiths added two further penalties before, midway through the half, Owens got his second try, which again the fly-half converted.

Whitland scrum-half Huw Rees missed two penalty chances before the Borderers eventually got themselves on the scoreboard with a try.

It came after good work by the pack saw them turn the ball over on Bridgend's 10-metre line. The backs then worked their way deep into the 22 where, after a kick through, Bridgend cleared to touch. A good catch and drive by the forwards saw a rolling maul brought down just short of the line, but quick hands enabled captain Ryan Michael to snatch his side's only try of the game, which Huw Rees converted.

Shortly after, Owens got his third try, which Griffiths added the two points to, and with Rees and Griffiths also trading a penalty apiece, the half-time score stood at 30 points to 10 to Bridgend.

Early in the second half, Owens got his fourth try, which this time went unconverted, to leave the score at 35 points to 10 to the home side.

Midway through the half, Whitland centre Mike Giorgiou was yellow-carded and just before he returned, replacement winger Grant Epton got Bridgend's fifth and final try.

Bridgend number eight Ben Rose was yellow-carded with seven minutes to go, but the Borderers failed to make use of their one-man advantage, although they came close on a couple of occasions.

The final score of 40 points to 10 did not reflect Whitland's second half performance when they deserved a couple of tries.

Celt Thomas had a strong game, as did second row Aidan Laxton, while Marc Jones and Jack Mason made their presence felt after coming on at half-time, as did Will Davies and Gary Evans in the back line, which was reshuffled, with Carwyn Jones going to 10.
