A five-strong team of Pembrokeshire sportswomen is about to embark on a unique rowing challenge - starting here in the county and finishing in London two weeks later. The 'Pink Ladies' will be rowing a traditional Pembrokeshire longboat called 'Orca' with wooden oars and no sliding seats... so no luxury of modern technology! The team, from Neyland Yacht Club, has become a familiar sight on the Milford Haven estuary where they have been training for the past five months. They have not only been building up their technique and muscles, but also their team spirit and blisters. "We're thrilled to be rowing this 35-mile challenge from Llangwm to Greenwich for charity," says cox Rachel Lort-Phillips. "We're doing it on behalf of the Wales Air Ambulance. So every blister and sore bottom is for a good cause. I was rescued by the Air Ambulance from Pendine Beach after I fell off a horse, so I owe them!" Some of the team only started rowing recently and it's a great break from their day jobs as estate agent, charity worker, HR consultant and film producer. The team will be collecting money along the route and are hoping everyone on the water for the bank holiday will give generously! The team will start from Llangwm on Sunday, August 26. They'll row 13 miles down to Dale, dodging the Irish Ferries and Dale Weekend races. Then on the Sunday, September 8, they'll take their longboat to London for the 22-mile Great River Race, starting in Richmond and finishing in Greenwich.
