The Pembrokeshire County Council Cabinet member for the environment and Welsh language has spoken of his ‘shock’ and ‘disbelief’ after hearing that vandals have forced the council to close public toilets in Pembroke for repairs.

Damage caused to the public conveniences on The Commons, Pembroke, will cost almost £1,000 to put right after vandals attacked the facility in broad daylight sometime between 1.30 and 5.30 pm on Tuesday, January 2.

The facility was closed after four windows, four skylights, sinks and worktops were smashed.

The damage comes just weeks after vandals ruined toilets at the multi-storey car park in Haverfordwest and Marine Road, Broad Haven, which cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

Clr. Cris Tomos said he was staggered to hear the news.

“I’m at a loss to understand why people would want to do this,” he said.

“Only weeks ago, I spoke of my disbelief about the mindless acts undertaken at other locations and now this occurs.

“These vandals are causing an inconvenience to the public and costing them money.

“It’s shocking and I ask for anyone who saw or heard anything to call our contact centre on 01437 764551 so we can work with the authorities to catch the perpetrators.”

In a separate incident on Wednesday, January 3, substantial damage was caused to the disabled toilet at Tenby’s North Beach when the sink drain pipe and towel rail holder were kicked off.

Danfo, maintenance contractors of public conveniences in Pembrokeshire, will undertake the repairs.
