A Milford teenager who ‘lost it’ whilst drunk and trashed his brother’s flat leaving blood on the walls, has been fined in court.
Eighteen-year-old Thomas Cronin, of Front Street, Rosemarket, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday, to plead guilty to a charge of causing criminal damage to household items at a flat in Pembroke Dock and a further charge of causing criminal damage to the property’s walls.
Prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard-Jones told the court that the incident occurred on July 5 when the defendant was visiting the flat where his brother and girlfriend were tenants.
“Mr. Cronin drunk far too much alcohol and mixed it with prescribed drugs, against the advice of his doctor.
“In the words of his brother he ‘lost it’ and Mr. Cronin’s brother left the flat and called the police,” he said.
A number of household items were damaged belonging to the girlfriend of Mr. Cronin’s brother, including a vacuum cleaner and microwave which the defendant had thrown around.
“He even damaged a hamster cage that had a live hamster in it at the time!” continued Mr. Pritchard-Jones.
“Mr. Cronin cut his hand from punching the wall, and left blood on the doors and walls which the landlord has had to hire a private cleaning firm to removed.
“The defendant told police in interview that he had drunk 20 bottles of beer over a four hour period, and couldn’t remember what happened, but accepted what his brother said.
“He has mental health issues that he is receiving support for,” added Mr. Pritchard-Jones.
Defence solicitor Mark Layton told the court that his client didn’t have a ‘great recollection’ of the matter, due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed.
Probation officer Julie Norman told the court that Mr. Cronin was subject to a referral order which would run until November, and that he was receiving support from the mental health crisis team.
Magistrates fined Mr. Cronin £120 for the first offence and gave no separate penalty for the second.
He was ordered to pay £200 compensation to Leyla Hearne, his brother’s girlfriend, and £50 to the landlord Martin Woodhall.
Mr. Cronin was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge.
