Dyfed-Powys Police is providing a behind the scenes look at different policing departments and the work they do to keep everyone safe through the Festive Season.
A series of short Behind the Scenes films are being incorporated in the force’s Operation Safe and Nice to All (Op SANTA) advent calendar, which is being opened each day on social media.
This week, the public have been offered a peak into the work of the Neighbourhood Policing Teams and partnership working to make sure Christmas events throughout Dyfed-Powys run smoothly and safely.
Llanelli Carnival is held on the last Friday in November every year and attracts up to 20,000 visitors to the town centre.
Llanelli Sgt Dominic Jones said: “The carnival is a strong Christmas tradition in Llanelli. It’s happened ever since I can remember. As a child I used to come to the carnival. It takes months of planning and partnership working to make sure things run smoothly.”
Dyfed-Powys Police works closely with Carmarthenshire Council, in particular the Highways Department, to make sure all the necessary road closures are in place. Officers also link in with town councillors and local businesses to ensure everyone is on board and prepared for the big event.
Milford Haven Christmas lights were switched on Saturday, December 3. A lantern parade through Milford Haven is incorporated in the annual event, which then returns to the town hall where children are greeted by Father Christmas.
Milford Haven Sgt Terri Harrison said: “We work closely with the council to make sure road closures are in place and that marshals are organised to help enforce the road closures. Our Neighbourhood Policing team attends the event, which includes police officers, Police Community Support Officers and officers from the Specials Constabulary. They all work hard to ensure attendees remain safe and I’m pleased to say the event went without incident.”
The Royal Welsh Winter Fair is a two-day extravaganza in Builth Wells that attracts around 28,000 visitors.
This event places significant demand on local policing and partnership working is the key to its success. Police work with the council, licensing authorities as well as Royal Welsh Show organisers, including their security and planning teams.
Inspector Brian Jones said: “We have to work very closely with all partners and also with the local community to ensure the event runs smoothly. It’s a great event and very good for the community of Builth Wells and the local economy.”
