A Milford man caught driving with cannabis in his system has been disqualified for a year.

Thirty-year-old Richard John Morrissey, of Hawthorn Path, pleaded guilty to driving his Seat Ibiza on Woodland Drive, with 4.0 micrograms per litre of cannabis in his blood, when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Dennis Davies told the court that police officers on duty on September 22, stopped the defendant in his vehicle, and he was arrested after a saliva test proved positive.

Defence solicitor Mark Layton said that it appeared to be a random stop check by police and there was no suggestion that his client wasn’t in control of the vehicle.

“When police officers indicated for Mr. Morrissey to stop, it did result in a punctured tyre, as he hit the pavement when he pulled over. He told officers that he’d smoked cannabis about an hour ago, but his speech or demeanour was unaffected,” explained Mr. Layton.

Magistrates fined the defendant £80 for the offence and ordered him to pay costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge. Mr. Morrissey was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
