A female from Milford has been given a 12 month conditional discharge after admitting using threatening behaviour and assaulting a police officer.

Twenty-four-year-old Hannah Ruth O’Donovan, of Gelliswick Road, pleaded guilty to both charges when she appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan told the court that a number of calls were made to the police on February 12, regarding two females fighting by the Spar store in Milford.

“There were crowds of people around the Spar area and the police officer that attended had her attention drawn to Miss O’Donovan who had a short black dress on and no shoes,” she explained.

When the officer spoke to Miss O’Donovan, she swore and said ‘I’m insulted that only one of you has turned up to deal with me’.

As it had been alleged that Miss O’Donovan had assaulted another girl, who was now in the Spar, she was asked to give her side of the story, but her behaviour was getting worse and more aggressive, and the officer made several attempts to stop the defendant from swearing.

“The officer tried to put Miss O’Donovan in the police vehicle but she grabbed the officer back, who then had to use her PAVA spray on the defendant,” continued Ms Morgan.

“The spray had the desired effect and she was able to gain control over the defendant, but she resisted the officer, and a member of the public assisted whilst the officer handcuffed her,” she added.

Defence solicitor Jonathan Webb told magistrates that his client had ‘blotted her copy book’ by appearing in court for the first time.

He explained that his client had been out into the early hours of the morning, and had then walked down to the cash point which was nearby to where she lived to check how much money she had spent from the night before.

She was approached by another female and another and crowds gathered round as a ‘melee’ was going on.

“She was still intoxicated at the time and in her temper had lashed out at the police officer. Miss O’Donovan apologised several times at the police station to the officer. It was a one off, as she is not that type of person,” added Mr. Webb.

Magistrates gave the defendant a 12 month conditional discharge, and ordered her to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £20 victim surcharge.
