A tragic incident at Marloes Sands claimed the life of 15-year-old Marcin Michal Komoszewski during a family holiday to Pembrokeshire over the August Bank Holiday weekend, an inquest has heard.

HM Coroner for Pembrokeshire Gareth Lewis today (September 24) opened an inquest into the circumstances of the boy’s drowning.

On Sunday, August 30, Dyfed-Powys Police had received a request for assistance from HM Coastguard, following a report of three people getting into difficulty at Marloes Sands, Milford Haven.

Marcin struggled in the water, but despite efforts from his family and a bystander, challenging conditions hindered rescue attempts.

Two individuals self-rescued, returning themselves safely to shore, but sadly, Marcin, who was visiting on holiday from the Yorkshire area, remained unaccounted for, and a multi-agency search was launched.

After the large search operation was launched, the multi-agency response was stood down on Tuesday, Septemer 1.

Then, a week later on September 8, the tragic discovery was made when a body was reported in the sea off St Anne's Head by a passing yacht.

Angle RNLI Lifeboat’s volunteer crew was dispatched to retrieve the body, and it was later confirmed by Dyfed-Powys Police that the deceased was indeed the young boy that had been missing.

The inquest heard that a post mortem examination undertaken at University Hospital Wales had not yet returned a result and further tests were needed, the results of which were expected to take nine months.

Before adjourning the hearing to a later date, the Coroner requested that witness statements be taken from Marcin's family and any witnesses on the beach.

He also asked for statements from those involved in the search and the recovery operation.
