Arson reduction manager Will Bowen said: “Controlled burning can be undertaken between sunrise and sunset as long as the fires are small, adequately supervised and five metres away from the property. You should also be aware of overhead wires and cables.
“A means of extinguishing the fire should be immediately available, such as a hosepipe or buckets of water.
“Frequent controlled burning can lead to prosecution, due to the smoke being classed as a nuisance.
“There are more environmentally friendly ways of disposing of garden waste or rubbish, however if you do decide to carry out a controlled burn, then the fire service should be contacted before lighting a fire and again once the fire has been extinguished on 0370 60 60 699 to ensure that a fire appliance is not sent to the address.”
