Children and parents leaving a school evening were left horrified after witnessing a man walking by so drunk on home made wine that he urinated all over himself.
Forty-two-year-old Matthew Owen Jones, of Green Terrace, Hubberston (formerly of Park Avenue, Kilgetty) appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday to plead guilty to a charge of being drunk and disorderly in a public place. He also admitted a further charge of possessing 0.4 grams of cannabis.
A charge of committing an act outraging public decency against Mr. Jones by behaving in an indecent manner, namely exposing himself in front of members of the public including children, was withdrawn by the prosecution and replaced by the drunk and disorderly charge.
Prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard-Jones told the court that the incident occurred on October 22 in Milford Haven when at around 4.45 pm, parents and children leaving a parents evening at a nearby primary school, witnessed Mr. Jones on a foothpath adjacent to the rugby club ‘hopelessly drunk’.
“He was so drunk that he had to support himself on a fence whilst urinating on the floor.
“Mr. Jones was urinating everywhere - on his clothes, his hand and legs, for what seemed to go on for an age, leaving a large pool on the pathway.
“One father stopped his wife and children from getting any closer as they walked by, and when he approached Mr. Jones to ask him what on earth he was doing, the defendant was abusive back and squared up to him, before he was pushed away and fell to the floor, where he was so drunk, he stayed until the police arrived.
“In a police interview after being arrested, he expressed remorse and said that he had become hopelessly drunk after consuming two pints of homemade wine. He also told officers that he smoked cannabis to relieve symptoms of sciatica,” he added.
Defence solicitor Mike Kelleher told the court his client had experienced some bad fortune in his life of late after losing his job and his partner had left him.
He also said that he had injured his back after a fishing accident in August and used cannabis for pain relief.
“He has little recollection of what occurred, he was out walking his bulldog who started tugging on his lead whilst he was urinating,” said Mr. Kelleher.
Magistrates fined Mr. Jones £60 for the drunk and disorderly charge and £40 for possessing cannabis.
He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £32 victim surcharge.
