IT’S business as usual for Dyfed-Powys Police over the Christmas period, with staff working to answer 999 and 101 calls 24 hours a day.
In a series of short Behind the Scenes videos, staff at the Force Control Centre have spoken about their role in ensuring members of the public are kept safe over the holidays.
The film is part of the force’s Operation Safe and Nice to All (Op SANTA) advent calendar, which is being opened each day on social media.
This week, call handlers have reminded the public that they will be available to deal with emergencies reported via 999, as well as non-emergency calls on 101.
They are also urging people to remember the difference between the two numbers.
Force Incident Manager Chief Inspector Chris Fraser said: “We would encourage people to call 999 if there is a threat to a person or property, and we will respond immediately.
“101 is our non-emergency number. We encourage people to use this when there is no threat to anyone’s life or property.
“This could include things like antisocial behaviour in your community, or it might be that you need to get some advice from an officer.”
Members of the public can also email HYPERLINK "mailto:[email protected]" [email protected] for slow time, non-urgent queries or if they need any advice.
Chris also spoke about what Christmas Day is like for her team working at the control room.
“Christmas is just another day for us, and we will be here on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day to answer your calls 24 hours a day,” she said.
“My shift is working over the Christmas period and into the New Year. It can be quite hard on your home life, but it is a part of the role, and generally families are very understanding.
“In years gone by I’ve worked morning shifts and afternoon shifts.
“Sometimes your partner, or maybe your children, will go to your in-laws and you join them later for Christmas dinner.
“Last year I had my parents over for dinner, did the washing up, then squeezed myself into my uniform and got myself to work by 5pm.
“At work we try to celebrate in our own small way while making sure we don’t interrupt business as usual. We have our Christmas tree up and some decorations, and there will no doubt be some buffet food here at some point on Christmas Day.
“We are lucky here, and you will almost always get a visit from one of the chief officers or one of our force chaplains, who are absolute gold. They’ll pop into the control room or station with a box of chocolates or mince pies to let you know you haven’t been forgotten about.”
