Plans to turn a section of the A478 road coming into Tenby from 50mph to 40mph are still under consideration by Pembrokeshire County Council - although some local county councillors appear to have differing views on such new Traffic Regulation Orders.
The section of the A478 road [just off the Crane Cross Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre] - on the main route towards Tenby - is being considered by the Local Authority.
At a recent meeting of East Williamston Community Council, county councillor for the ward Cllr Jacob Williams suggested to members that they should oppose PCC’s plans, However, members agreed that as they were not in agreement with this, no action would be taken regarding the proposal.
County councillor for Saundersfoot’s south ward, Cllr Chris Williams said during his time as the local member, he’d had many conversations with residents about speeding concerns in the locality.
“While opinions have sometimes varied, I believe meaningful progress has been made—particularly through joint efforts with Councillor Cormack—which led to the installation of three speed indicators on key access roads into Saundersfoot,” he remarked.
“Over the past two years, I’ve also spoken extensively with residents and business owners along Moreton Road. These discussions have also included churchgoers and local visitors to the Farm Shop.
“In response to the issues raised, I arranged a meeting with Claire Williams, Senior Traffic and Road Safety Engineer at Pembrokeshire County Council, alongside a local business owner, to explore their concerns in more detail.
“Following this meeting, a speed and safety review was undertaken by PCC’s Highways Team. As a result of this review, PCC is potentially looking to extend the existing 40mph speed limit from the south of Moreton to a point south of the junction with Sandyhill Road.
“This change would reduce the current 50mph limit to 40mph, responding directly to community feedback and recent incidents in the area.
“This proposal spans three electoral wards, and I have formally submitted my support for the scheme. It’s vital in my role to listen to the voices of local residents and businesses, and in this case, the message has been overwhelmingly clear.
“The Moreton/Crane Cross proposal is one of 10 speed limit amendments being considered across the county. I would like to personally thank Claire Williams and her team for their work on this important issue.”

County councillor for the ward of St Mary Out Liberty [New Hedges], Cllr Rhys Jordan recently joined members of the Tenby and Saundersfoot Neighbourhood Policing Team to carry out speed checks at two locations in the New Hedges area that had been reported to him.
“There is clearly an issue in the village, with several vehicles exceeding the 20mph speed limit in both directions. On the New Hedges bypass, however, we observed no breaches of the 50mph limit during the time we monitored, which was reassuring,” he stated.
“Of course, traffic conditions vary by time and day, so these are just a snapshot. We’ll return at a different time to compare findings and continue monitoring.”
