The infamous ‘Marmite’ years seemed a distant memory as the 2018 Carten100 set out from Cardiff at 7.30 am on Saturday morning.

The previous weeks’ weather forecasts bounced from sunny and calm, to Westerly winds and damp, finally settling on a chilly, still day ahead.

Once again the full compliment of 2,500 hopeful cyclists headed West to the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline. Passing through Bridgend, Margam and Swansea they weaved their way to Tenby on the promise of a plate of pasta and a pint of beer in the iconic North Harbour dock.

The event which has been running for 14 years is known as the friendliest in the annual cycling calendar. With the main focus of encouraging people to cycle more, get healthy and raising a little money for charity the Carten100 has raised nearly a Million pounds since it began.

This year the crew nominated the ‘Tenovus Closer to Home’ appeal which is funding the purchase and adaption of mobile chemotherapy units for those who cannot readily make it to the cancer centres.

These units are staffed by Velindre nurses and some of this year’s total will go toward funding them. The Carten Crew also allocate donations to a number of other charities such as the Wales Air Ambulance, Stroke Association, LATCH and Kidney Research Wales to name a few.

Although the ride takes place each year, next year’s date will not be finalised for some time and there are rumours of a slight change.
