On Sunday (September 2) the Pembrokeshire County Run arrived at its 21st anniversary - also coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the legendary Morris Minor.
Despite a damp and grey start to the day, hundreds of motor vehicles and motorbikes arrived at the start line via gate 3 of the Pembrokeshire County Showground.
Due to the weather many were unable to arrive prior to organiser Jeff sounding his starters whistle at 10.30 am but by the time everyone arrived at the halfway stop courtesy of the Dyfed Shire Horse Farm, the approximate number taking part was 400 to 450!
At 10.30 am all the motorbikes and the Morris Minors led the ‘Grand Parade’ over the start line with the 85 mile motoring tour following a route along the A487 via Haverfordwest, Newgale, Solva, St David’s, Goodwick, Fishguard, Dinas and Newport.
The second leg of the tour continued along the A487 followed by a ‘drive thru’ of the town of Cardigan, before linking up with the A478 to Narberth for yet anther ‘drive thru’.
The vehicles/motorbikes then linked up to the A40 for their return to the Showground and the finish line on a bright sunny afternoon.
Organisers Jeff and Sian Edwards were delighted with the way everything went on this very special year for the event - not bad going for an event that was intended to be staged for just three years from 1998 to promote Pembrokeshire for the new millennium, with an 85 mile motoring tour of Pembrokeshire starting at Milford Haven and ending in Tenby.
In September 2000, what Jeff and Sian thought would be the final event - the vast majority taking part made it clear to them that due to it being such an enjoyable event - they asked the couple to carry on. and the rest they say is history with the 2018 run arriving at its 21st Anniversary!
Grateful thanks go to the Western Telegraph, Paul Sartori Foundation, Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society, Phil Thompson, Noel Robinson and all the dedicated marshals who worked so hard on the day.
Next year the Pembrokeshire County Run will take place on Sunday, September 1, and will be dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Mini and in support of the Paul Sartori Foundation.
