Environment Agency Wales, in partnership with Pembrokeshire Rivers Trust, have helped 1st Kilgetty Scouts gain their angling badge. Fishing events held at Holgan Farm, Llawhaden, and Llyn Carfan, Tavernspite, plus the work carried out at the Scout Hall, have all helped the scouts to learn the skill and art of fishing and help them towards getting their Scouts Angler Badge. Environment Agency Wales sponsors the angling badge, and there are some tough challenges to meet before qualifying as a proud owner. Pupils need to gain an understanding of all aspects of angling, including health and safety, angling craft, waterside awareness, tackle and techniques, know your fish, administration and law and the role of the Environment Agency. Ex-world course fishing champion Ian Heaps and a number of newly-trained fishing coaches from Pembrokeshire have all been on hand at these introductory fishing days to provide help and advice to the scouts. 1st Kilgetty Scouts are the first scouts group in Pembrokeshire to have achieved the angler badge and were presented with them following the final coaching session at Llyn Carfan Coarse Fishery at the end of last month. Roger Pratt, Environment Agency fisheries officer for the area, said: "Angling is a healthy and worthwhile pastime and is a totally inclusive sport. It does not discriminate against gender, race, age or athletic ability. It was a pleasure seeing so many young scouts outside in the countryside, learning the art of fishing." Pauline Nicholas, 1st Kilgetty Scout Leader, said: "Myself and all the Scouts would like to pass on our sincerest thanks to all partners involved in arranging and making these events possible. These events have helped the scouts gain the angler badge. All Scouts thoroughly enjoying the experience of fishing and I am sure we will have a number of new anglers amongst our group."
