A recent beach clean in Saundersfoot saw pupils from the seaside village’s school uncover a ‘Smarties’ lid much older than them - from a tube between 1975 to 1988!
Year 6 pupils from Saundersfoot CP school joined in with a litterpick and beach clean in the village recently to look after the environment and to raise money towards their End of Year celebrations, managing to collect 22.25 kg of waste!
“Julie Davies organised the kit for Surfers Against Sewage’s ‘Million Mile Clean’ and did a brand audit of what was collected – cans from Molson Coors brands being the most collected with Tesco coming in a close second,” said local county councillor Chris Williams.
“They got a couple of ‘treasures’ – a ‘Smarties’ lid from a tube between 1975 to 1988 so way older than any of the children cleaning and a Fairy Liquid bottle harder to date but that was discontinued in 2000!
“They also picked up 23 drinks cans and plastic bottles which were sorted for recycling and 3kg of rope and fishing line which will be used in a weaving project over the summer and 3 was definitely their Magic Number – they picked up 3 pairs of sunglasses, 3 socks, 3 gloves, 3 ‘Prosecco’ plastic corks, 3 plastic cups, 3 balls and 3 disposable vapes!”

On April 26, a further beach clean took place, with 16 taking part from Back Beach Saundersfoot to Monkstone, as part of Surfers Against Sewage’s ‘million mile beach clean’ organised by Ecoast and Pembrokeshire Beach Cleans.
“Despite the beaches being relatively clean they still managed to gather 13.5kg of rubbish plus a further 1.1kg of plastic bottles and cans (which have gone off to be recycled) and a large piece of rope that was placed in the rope bin on Saundersfoot Harbour, as part of Sea trust’s Recycle Môr project,” continued Cllr Williams.
“A further 5.5kg was collected along the Incline on route to the Sailing Club.
“Big thanks to Mel at Saundersfoot Sailing Club for providing post-clean refreshments, the cleaning team at Pembrokeshire County Council and Saundersfoot Harbour.”
The next beacn clean for Saunderfoot heading to Monkstone will take place on Tuesday, May27 with those joining in asked to meet at the Sailing Club at 10.30 am.
