Rains hits county bowls finals
Friday, 17 July 2009
The second part of the Pembroke County Bowling Association finals was held on Saturday.
As reported last week, the Under 18s singles had already been played and was won by 2007 winner Ryan Thomas, a member of Haverfordwest BC.
Ryan was again in winning form on Saturday when he ‘did the double’, winning the Under 25s singles for the first time against Craig Guymer, of Tenby, 21-8.
Ryan and Craig, however, were among the few finalists who managed to play their games at Pembroke Dock, for the event had to be called off after heavy rain made the green too slippery for play.
Successful in playing were Tenby’s John Roberts, John Baggott, Simon Evans and Phil Carpenter, who chalked up a 27-13 win in the rinks over Mark Thorpe, Neil Crawford, Barry Absolom and John Lewis, of Haverfordwest.
In the triples, it was another Tenby v Haverfordwest clash. But this went right to the wire, with Seasiders Peter Day, Andrew Muskett and Paul Diment just losing on the last end to Richard O’Leary, Tony Wilks and P.D.S. Jenkins.
The other game to be played was the Over 60s singles between 2007 winner, John Jenkins, of Saundersfoot, and Pendine’s Stewart King-Thomas, with John clinching a 21-19 victory.
Once finals day itself was called off, competition secretary Arthur Jarvis, who is also this year’s president, had the unenviable task of rearranging games to be played this week.
On Monday evening, the mixed pairs between Tenby’s Ysie White and John Roberts and Whitland mother and son duo, Kathy and Dan Jenner, took place.
Ysie and John were leading 22-6 at 12 ends and must have felt they had one hand on the trophy with only a few ends remaining. However, the Whitland pair pulled off a terrific comeback to snatch a 28-24 victory and ensure the cup stays in their club for another year, having been won by Andrea and Glyndwr Thomas last year.
Other finals were scheduled for last night (Thursday) and tonight (Friday), results of which will be in next week’s issue.
