PENDINE 65 (2 pts) SAUNDERSFOOT 94 (12)
Saundersfoot belatedly commenced their division one programme last Saturday with a fine away win over Pendine.
Having had the previous week’s match postponed due to bad weather, the sun shone on this encounter and, although missing several regulars, the villagers put up a fighting display on a heavy green, winning the game by 29 shots.
On rink one, Steve Poole played like hed never been away and with a solid three in Roy Kennion, newcomer Terry Lamkin and veteran John Dugmore, won by 24 shots, restricting the home rink skipped by Dave King-Thomas to winning just five ends.
Rink two saw George Cavell, Roy Pring, John Moffatt and skip John Jenkins race into a seven-shot lead and restrict their opponents led by Malcolm Thomas to only winning seven of the 21 ends.
Despite losing a six on the last end, the Saundersfoot rink ran out winners by six shots.
On rink three, Paul Blayney skipped Brian Deeley, Alan Brace and captain Macky Brace against a determined home rink skipped by Stewart King-Thomas and, although 10 shots down at tea, pulled back to eventually lose by four.
On rink four, Don Stokes, Nev Ruff, Alan Brain and Steve Dick had a real tussle with the home four skipped by Mal Evans.
This contest was nip and tuck all the way through and the home rink held a three-shot advantage on18 ends.
A score of one and a three on the 20th meant a nail-biting last end, but the Saundersfoot boys picked up another two shots, with the aid of a superb drawing wood from skip Steve, to win by three shots.
This was an excellent display against a team that are difficult to beat on their home patch and indeed it’s four years since Saundersfoot last came away with a positive result.
Next Sunday, the boys will be looking to build on this good start when they entertain newly-promoted Fishguard and Goodwick with a 2 pm start.
Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Pendine skips only):
R. Kennion, T. Lamkin, J. Dugmore, S. Poole 32; D. King Thomas 8.
G. Cavell, R. Pring, J. Moffatt, J. Jenkins 24; M. Thomas 18.
B. Deeley, A. Brace, M. Brace, P. Blayney 17; S. King-Thomas 21.
D. Stokes, N. Ruff, A. Brain, S. Dick 21; M. Evans 18.
ST. ISSELL’S 77 (3 pts) WHITLAND BORDERERS 85 (11)
The gentlemen of St. Issell’s also started their league campaign last Saturday with a home fixture against Whitland Borderers in Division Two of the Pembrokeshire League.
In a close encounter, the result was in doubt until the last ends were bowled but the seasiders eventually lost by just eight shots.
On rink two, Peter Lewis, Mike Oliver, Don Pope and skip Keith Rowlands secured the only win of the day, defeating their opponents by seven shots.
Rink three saw Lionel Allen, Dennis Reed, John Austin and captain Stew Howe earn a creditable draw.
Five shots down with just two ends to go, scores of three and two ensured a share of the points.
Barrie Lee’s rink of Newton Griffiths, Bob Wood and Bill Glyn plus himself as skip put up a good display but went down by seven shots.
On rink five, Dave Williams, Gwyn for Davies, Derek Rowan and Mike Carr were level at 10 ends, but only won three of the last eleven ends to go down by eight shots.
This was a good performance against a strong Borderers team and the St. Issell’s boys will be hoping to build on this in their next fixture against St. Kath’s away on Sunday, May 17.

P. Lewis, M. Oliver, D. Pope, K. Rowlands 25; S. Price 18.

SAUNDERSFOOT 93 PORTISHEAD 127
Saundersfoot entertained the Portishead British Legion touring team last Sunday in a men’s friendly.
Despite a reasonable start, the home team struggled to keep up with strong opponents and eventually lost by 34 shots.
The only Saundersfoot winning rink was Ian Nicholls, Derek Rowan, Don Stokes and Nev Ruff, who won by two shots, although Peter Lewis, Colin Roden, Keith Rowlands and John Moffat earned a draw, despite being four shots down with only three ends left.
A sunny afternoon, good company and new friends made, everything a friendly game should have, contributed to an enjoyable day.
