Tomorrow’s eye care technology is here today

Friday, 10 July 2009

It might seem like something out of Doctor Who, but customers at Specsavers in Pembroke Dock are now benefiting from a new state-of-the-art camera which produces detailed images of the back of the eye.
Specsavers at Dimond Street has invested in a fundus camera, an advanced piece of eye test technology which plays an important role in the early diagnosis and prevention of eye disease.
By reading the back of the eye, the high-tech camera can detect a variety of health problems, such as, glaucoma, diabetes, inflammatory disorders, age-related macular degeneration and vascular occlusions.
Store director at Specsavers in Pembroke Dock, Gary Owen, said: “This equipment enables us to take a highly detailed photograph of the eye, allowing us to monitor a patient’s sight more closely and with a greater degree of accuracy than previously possible. This allows us to identify any deterioration in a patient’s sight quickly and act upon this efficiently.
“The fundus camera is used in addition to the usual thorough eye examination, which we advise all our customers to have every two years. This is a detailed and methodical process carried out by our expert opticians, designed to examine the health of the eyes.”
