Six Redwing Class boats sailed in a decent but shifty northerly breeze, and changeable tide on Thursday, May 15th.

249 led off the start line, but at the top of the first beat 241 came in with rights and stole the lead.

A stern luffing battle ensued on the first reach, way above the layline to the gybe mark, allowing 244 to sneak through to leeward and vie for the lead.

Positions were hotly contested throughout the remaining three lap race, with the fleet splitting left and right trying to pass each other, and all boats showing consistent speed, not bad for boats spanning 50 years in age.

The Redwing Inland National Championship 2025 is being run by Tenby Sailing Club at Llys Y Fran reservoir on June 21st and 22nd.

Eight boats made the most of the sunny afternoon on Saturday, May 17th for all classes racing.

Julian Cumpsty says he lost a minute in the first race due to having to go back to re-cross the line.

He said: “The second start was competitive.

“We were not totally confident about the rig settings for the light wind in the chop so were experimenting a bit, chocks in and then chocks out.

“We seemed to lose out by going left up the beat and taking some bad shifts

“With tide against, the lower handicap boats have to spend longer in the tide which may be a factor.

“Hard to gauge as no direct boat on boat comparison.”
