Narberth 33 pts. Felinfoel 9

Narberth threequarters made excellent use of the possession provided by the pack to run in three tries at home to Felinfoel, supplemented by a fine solo effort from number eight Lewis Wood and a try by replacement prop Sean Lloyd.
Although Foel were committed throughout the match, the Otters’ defence proved to be impregnable and the only points conceded were from the three penalties kicked by winger Jason Howells, who looked capable of taking a place kick from any part of his own half.
Surprisingly, Howells missed out on a straightforward penalty opportunity after five minutes and two minutes later Narberth scored when scrum-half Andrew Davies finished off a good passing movement involving Aled Davies, new flanker Wayne Williams and Nick Jones, before Davies touched down after some clever inter-passing with Jones.
Aled Davies converted, but Jason Howells clawed back three points with a 40-metre penalty six minutes later.
The Otters bounced back straightaway when Roger Davies the fullback crossed for a try from a move set up by flanker Wayne Williams and Davies somehow evaded the clutches of the Felinfoel defence to burst through for a try, again converted by Aled Davies.
Jason Howells was on target with another long range penalty kick midway through the half and then on the stroke of half-time, Lewis Wood made a superb blind-side break from a scrum near the Foel line to power over for a try from a heel against the head.
Aled Davies was off target on this occasion and then in injury time, Jason Howells slotted his third penalty with a kick from the touchline.
Seven minutes into the second half, after Gareth Bateman was yellow-carded for Narberth, Howells attempted a long range penalty kick from inside his own half and, although it had the accuracy, it went just under the bar.
Six minutes later he missed a most kickable penalty from 25 metres.
Aled Davies was also off target with a long range penalty attempt for Narberth, but midway through the half, Roger Davies scored again from another fine individual break from inside the Foel half to cross for a try converted by Aled Davies.
Replacement prop Sean Lloyd completed the try scoring when he was on hand to finish off a move initiated by strong running from Narberth centre Steve Martin and the try was converted by Aled Davies.
Commenting after the match, Narberth’s director of rugby, Jonathan Dodd, said: “We are very pleased with the result as it is a great start to the season. We have worked hard on our defence and contact area in recent weeks and the boys took these aspects of play into their game, which is also nice for a coach.
“We scored five tries, but had to work hard for the tries and Felinfoel came at us, whilst their defence was also very good.
“We are over the moon to score that many points, but it is a long season and we are just looking forward to playing Llangennech away next week.
“Flanker Wayne Williams was excellent in an impressive league debut for the club, outside-half Aled Davies played well and centre Steve Martin had a good all-round game, being particularly strong in defence.”
Fullback Roger Davies was chosen as man-of-the-match by the Balcony Suite match sponsors, the Narberth RFC Vice Presidents and Patrons, and the Otters Holt match sponsors, Garnet Bowen and Friends.
Narberth Former Players Association sponsored the match ball
Narberth fielded: Roger Davies, Nick Jones, Steve Martin, Lee Glanville (Richard Davies), Tom Bonnell, Andrew Davies (Adrian Killa), Aled Davies, Tom Slater (Sean Lloyd), Dan Smith, Justin Hughes (capt.), Chris Scarf, Alex Jenkins (Jason Jennings), Gareth Bateman and Lewis Wood (Jim Kaumaitotoya).
