Young hockey players in Pembrokeshire had the benefit of top class coaching during the half-term holiday in a new ‘Sticks and Stars’ programme, launched by the Welsh Hockey Union (WHU).
Pembrokeshire’s young hockey players have excelled themselves, with 11 being selected for the South West Regional Academy in Swansea which starts this month.

With a mid-morning start to the game, played at Pembroke Leisure Centre, Tenby must have thought they were still in bed and having nightmares as table-topping Llanybydder opened the scoring in the first minute without a Tenby stick getting any touch.

With the Carew ’keeper Leigh Thomas going to the wrong entrance of the sports complex in Penarth, Carew were forced to start the game with only eight players and no goalkeeper, leaving Dave Ferguson to step in as a ‘kicking back’.

After conceding an early goal from a short corner error, Carew went on to dominate the game against a high-riding Swansea Bay team, with captain Jamie Smith putting in two and young Sam Barton scoring his first goal for the club in his first season and only his fourth senior game.
